Local Community Ministries
GRACE Ministries PDF Print E-mail

GRACE Ministries is a community outreach program that serves low-income immigrant families in the local community.  One Saturday each month (typically the second Saturday of the month), low-income families receive food, clothing, diapers, household linens, toys and children’s books. The ministry also provides job training for Personal Care Aids and Commercial Drivers Licenses to eligible low-income immigrants.

There are many ways to serve in the ministry:

Set Up Fridays: Opportunites to serve on the Friday preceding a Grace Ministries Saturday include volunteers that prepare the Fellowship Hall and rooms for the ministry by:

  • Setting up tables and chairs
  • Preparing the hospitality area for serving on Saturday
  • Sorting and hanging clothing donations
  • Setting up the Children’s Corner with books and crafts
  • Arranging toy donations and linen donations
  • Bagging food
  • Collecting and disposing of trash and cardboard

Saturday at GRACE Ministries: Opportunities to serve on Saturday include:

  • Pre-registration and greeting (Spanish speakers are very helpful)
  • Registration (Spanish speakers needed)
  • Hospitality – setting out refreshments
  • Children’s Corner – doing crafts with children/reading to children
  • Worship (assisting with the short worship time – music)
  • Working in the clothing, toy, linen, diaper and food rooms
  • Helping guests take their goods to their vehicles
  • Clean Up

MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE: Support GRACE Ministries through your financial gifts and donations. Donations are needed and appreciated each month including seasonal clothing, diapers, household linens, small toys, and children’s books.  Clothing donations should be bagged and labeled with the type of clothing.  This helps with the sorting of the clothing.  Donations may be dropped off in Fellowship Hall beginning the Sunday prior to a GRACE Ministries Saturday.

  • Hot Meals – On the third Tuesday of each month CUMC provides a hot dinner meal for over 100 homeless men, women and children living in local motels and on the street.   The cooking team prepares and packages the meal between 3:00 – 5:00 PM.  The delivery team takes the meal to motels and parking lots along Rt 29 in Fairfax where homeless families can come to receive a healthy and warm dinner.

  • Supportive Housing Program - provides comprehensive support for individuals and families that are homeless. Services include both permanent and transitional supportive housing. Supportive Housing is based on the "Housing First" model, which argues that the first step to ending homelessness must begin with a home.  CUMC supports a family in the supportive housing program.

  • Hypothermia Shelter – The Hypothermia Prevention Response Program provides a warm place to stay on cold winter nights during the winter months. Churches open their doors to host the shelter and provide all the food, supplies and people to run the shelter each night.  CUMC hosts the shelter for five nights each winter.

Military Ministry PDF Print E-mail

Military Ministry -  The Military Ministry is an outreach to wounded soldiers and their families who are staying at the Fisher House at Walter Reed Hospital. Throughout the year, those serving through this ministry reach out to support these families in a variety of ways.  In 2010 the ministry served at the Fisher House in the following ways:

  • Pizza dinners were provided for all the families at the Fisher House once a month
  • Volunteers helped to manage the Fisher Houses while the paid staff enjoyed a weekend off many times during the year
  • Two 32-inch TVs were provided for families staying at the Fisher House
  • Four mini-refrigerators were purchased for the rooms.
  • Toys for the children of three families were purchased for Christmas.  The parents were unable to go shopping; however the children still received everything on their lists! Christmas cookies were provided for all the families

The Military Ministry and the Fisher Houses have been joined in a wonderful relationship for many years.  It has been a blessing to all those who serve and give to this ministry to be able to offer support to wounded soldiers and their families.
