Weekly Devotion 5/20/22

Weekly Devotion with Kim Wu

I used to enjoy drinking soda with my dinner; I was a Pepsi person. But in my early twenties, I started drinking milk with dinner. It was a habit I picked up from my future husband.

The funny thing is that after a while, I no longer had any desire to drink Pepsi. It was replaced by a genuine craving for milk with my meal. I don’t even like soda any more.

We develop a taste for what we consume.

Starting June 1, our church is challenging each one of us to read through the four gospels over the summer: 4 Gospels in 3 Months. Don’t miss this opportunity to develop a taste for God’s Word.

“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103)

Many if not most of us have felt the burden of these past two years on our shoulders. The world right now looks unrecognizable to us. How have we gotten here and how do we get out?

“My eyes fail from watching for your salvation and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise. Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love, and teach me your statutes. I am your servant; give me understanding, so that I may know your decrees. It is time for the LORD to act, for your law has been broken. Truly I love your commandments more than gold, more than fine gold. Truly I direct my steps by all your precepts; I hate every false way.” (Psalm 119:123-128)

Timothy Keller, in ”The Songs of Jesus,” tells us what the psalmist is doing here. “He asks God to 'act' (verse 126), which means, 'I am out of ideas and energy! I put it all in your hands.' There comes a time when all there is to do is to pray, to tend to your own heart and life, and to wait for God to open a door (Revelation 3:8).”

Let’s pray right now for a hunger for God’s Word. And let's pray it every day, between now and June 1. Let’s tend to our heart and life, by seeking God with all our hearts. God will answer our prayers.

Lord God, I confess that I neglect your Word. I allow a busy schedule and my daily distractions to keep me from spending time with You, from getting to know You through the Words you have spoken directly to me in the Bible. Give me a hunger for Your Word. Make me crave spending time there with You. Give me an enthusiasm for reading and studying the Bible that comes from a deep conviction of the value of what I will find within those pages. In Jesus’ name I pray this. Amen.
