Pastor Matthew Smith is passionate about introducing people to the love and grace of God and helping congregations grow in outreach to their communities. He enjoys preaching, serving those in need, and fostering meaningful connections within the church and beyond.
An ordained elder in The United Methodist Church, Pastor Matthew has served in diverse ministry settings, including as Senior Pastor of Calvary UMC in Arlington, founding pastor of Haymarket UMC, and pastor of Andrew Chapel UMC and the Mount Vernon & South River Charge. He has also served as a chaplain at Olympic National Park and on the Virginia Board of Ordained Ministry.
Born in Spencer, West Virginia, and raised in the Shenandoah Valley, Pastor Matthew’s faith was nurtured at Trinity UMC in Lexington, VA. He earned his B.A. in Religious Studies from Randolph-Macon College and his M.Div. from Wesley Theological Seminary.
He is married to Danielle Mutone-Smith, PhD, Managing Director for the Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance at USAID, and they have two children, Nicolas, a college freshman, and Gianna, an 8th grader.
