Children in Worship

Children of all ages are welcome in worship. CUMC considers children equal members of the family of faith and of the church family, and believe that experiencing worship is an essential part of faith formation for growing children.
In worship, children are drawn closer to God; they can gain strength from being with other believers, and learn to focus on God through prayer, music and scripture. In order to help children feel more involved in worship, a special Children’s Bulletin is prepared for them each Sunday so they can follow the order of worship more easily. Ask an usher for one or find one in the CUMC narthex (lobby). Bags with quiet activities for children are also available each week.  Children can also participate in worship by serving as choir members, acolytes, offering helpers, greeters and readers. For more information about empowering your child to participate in worship services, please contact Diane Beatley (, Director of Children’s Ministry, or call the CUMC office (703.830.2684).

Children’s Fellowship Groups

Bible Buddies is a Fellowship Group for children ages 3-5 years old (pre-kindergarten). All Bible Buddies must be potty trained to attend the group. The group meets late September through April on Monday afternoons from 4:30 – 5:30 PM in Room 116. There is a Bible Buddies leader, but parents also volunteer on a rotating basis as helpers each week. Children listen to a short bible story, create a craft, and enjoy a snack. Registration is available in the classroom.

JUMP Fellowship Group jump

All Kindergartners – 6th graders are invited to join JUMP (Junior United Methodist People), a fellowship group that meets on select Sunday evenings from 4:30-6:30 PM for fellowship, mission, and dinner. JUMP will resume in fall 2017.

Nurseries are available during the 9:30, 11:00 and 11:02 worship services for children under 2 years. The Nurseries are staffed by paid managers who are assisted by parent volunteers. Nurseries are located at the east end of the education wing on the ground level. Parents who wish to worship with their infants and toddlers may prefer to sit near the back of the Sanctuary. Also, the beautiful CUMC Narthex (lobby) is designed to double as a “crying room” where parents can hear and see the service while their children play comfortably without disturbing others. There are many options for parents of the youngest in the church family.

Nursery Pager System
The Sunday nurseries have pagers for parents leaving their children in the infant or toddler nurseries. The pagers vibrate so as not to disturb others. Parents who feel a bit apprehensive about leaving their child on Sunday morning may request a pager from the nursery manager.

CUMC Nurseries Continue to Blossom
More volunteers are needed Sunday mornings during the 9:30 AM or 11:00 AM services with infants and toddlers. If you can help care for the youngest in our church family for 1 hour every other month, contact Diane Beatley, at 703.830.2684 ext 1867 or

Parents of the Infant & Toddler Nurseries

Special Events

The Children’s Ministry hosts several special events for the children of CUMC and our surrounding community.

Preschool Easter Celebration: Each spring, preschool children aged 2-5 years old and their families are invited to join in an Easter Celebration, complete with crafts, games, a snack and an Easter egg hunt.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Spring Movie Night: CUMC’s Children’s Ministry and the Centreville Day School host a children’s Veggie Tales movie night every spring.  Children cuddle up to their favorite blanket or pillow, while watching a fun movie on the big screen and enjoying a yummy nut-free snack.

Sock Hop:  Every winter, elementary-aged children are invited to a Sock-Hop Dance, Pizza and Ice cream Social.  Children enjoy an evening of dancing to a live DJ, while helping the local hypothermia shelter by donating adult socks to those in need.
