Rev. Matthew Smith

Lead Pastor

Pastor Matthew Smith is enthusiastic about the opportunity Christ extends to the church to introduce people to the love and grace of God. He enjoys preaching, serving those in need, and helping congregations to grow in their outreach to their community.

As an ordained elder in The United Methodist Church, Pastor Matthew previously served as the Senior Pastor of Calvary UMC in Arlington; founding pastor of Haymarket UMC in Prince William County; sole pastor at Andrew Chapel UMC in Stafford; and pastor of the Mount Vernon & South River two-point-charge in Greene County VA. Pastor Matthew served as a chaplain at Olympic National Park, chair of Theology on the VA Board of Ordained Ministry, as a member of the General Conference Board of Church and Society, and as a delegate to the World Methodist Conference in Seoul, South Korea.

Pastor Matthew was born in Spencer, West Virginia, and grew up in the Shenandoah Valley of Rockbridge County. He was nurtured in faith at Trinity UMC in Lexington, VA, from which his father, Robert W. Smith Jr, was recommended for ministry, making Matthew a PK (i.e., preacher’s kid).

He graduated from Randolph-Macon College with a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and minors in History and Asian Studies. He also studied at Lancaster University and the University College of St. Martin’s in England. He was awarded his Master of Divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary in 2001 while interning at Foundry UMC in Washington, DC.

Pastor Matthew has two children, Nicolas (a rising senior in high school) and Gianna (a rising 7th grader). His wife, Danielle Mutone-Smith, PhD., and he have been married for 21 years. She is the Managing Director for the Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance at USAID.
